The Mullan Contracting Company Captures “Award of Excellence” for the Edward St. John Learning Center at McDonogh School from Associated Builders and Contractors The Mullan Contracting Company has won an “Award of Excellence” from the Baltimore Chapter of the Associated Builders and Contractors (ABC) in its 2015 awards competition, for the construction of The Edward St. John Learning Center , located on the campus of McDonogh School in Owings Mills.
The annual awards program recognizes Maryland-area general contracting companies for outstanding work in various categories based on the cost of the project. Opened last year, The Edward St. John Learning Center is a three-story 75,000 square foot structure that was designed to serve as the center of campus activity for the Owings Mills coeducational school. The building includes an infirmary, fine arts and dance studios, a dining hall that seats up to 685 students and flexible spaces to accommodate dining, classes, meetings, lectures, grade-level gatherings and special events activities.
The Edward St. John Learning Center was de- signed by Bowie Gridley Architects . “Among the challenges our team overcame during this project was the construction of the forty foot high clear span ceiling, which we accomplished without the utilization of tie rods to execute the dramatic presen – tation of the grand dining hall,” explained Joseph Rode, President of The Mullan Contracting Company. “To- gether with our construction of the adjacent Naylor Building, these two projects accomplish McDonogh School’s goal of shifting the energy and navigation to this new campus quad.” Founded in 1904 and headquartered in Lutherville, MD, The Mullan Contracting Company is a full-service construction management and general contracting firm specializing in the commercial office, retail, hospitali – ty, healthcare and institutional industries.
